Race Report

Chris Bailey

It was a poor turnout, by our usual standards, for our first visit to Loton Park this year.  With this being the most liked hillclimb by SpeedMog competitors it was a disappointing entry.  Maybe everyone was busy searching for their own chocolate brownies as Michele had produced Easter Sunday chocolate rice crispy cakes.

So, with 3 entries, in 2 cars, it was the Baileys and Baines that took to the hill with just 48 other competitors.  An early morning stroll up the hill revealed the alterations MSUK had deemed necessary to give the venue a hillclimb licence; A couple of additional tyre barriers and an extensive armco addition at the top of Cedar Straight.  A damp track welcomed us with a green covering, particularly under the trees, this being only the second day of competition this year.

After a bit of drizzle too before our first runs, it was a tentative first run by all.  Second practice came quickly and improvements were made by all apart from Chris who added 3 seconds! Then we were straight into timed runs 1 & 2 before lunch with us all taking over 10 seconds off our initial practice as the track dried.

Lunch in the sun, rice cakes, a quick snooze after a busy day at the Taster Day yesterday and we were into 3 more timed runs!  The first saw Chris setting his FTD and putting the pressure on Simon and leading by just 0.2 points.  However he had peaked early with both Simon & Michele (very nearly) getting quicker with every run through the day as the track continued to dry.  At the end the leaderboard showed; Simon, Chris & Michele.  A fabulous day with plenty of runs.  Let’s hope there’s a fuller Morgan entry in July.

Postscript;  the results were revised on May 14 after Simon realised he had put the wrong target time down for class 6, which meant that Chris had won with Simon 2nd.

Plenty of room to line up
