Race Report

Jim Andrews

Saturday 11th July promised to be a hot heat wave day so it was with some trepidation that two Speedmoggers turned up to compete at the Lydden Hill circuit in Kent. It seemed appropriate that both were in 4/4s powered by Kent crossflow engines. It appeared all was set for a close competition. There was the usual eclectic mix of cars in the paddock and the Morgans were allocated space between the Aston Martins – both classic and contemporary, and a couple of bike-engined single seaters.

The morning temperatures were very pleasant and the Morgans followed the Austin Healeys onto the track for their practice runs. The conditions were perfect. Jim Andrews was red flagged on his run as the Healey in front of him spun off, fortunately there was no serious damage to car or driver. The episode made Jim drive cautiously but it had no effect on Clive Nicholls. He put in a stunning drive and his lap time was seven seconds faster than Jim’s. This was outstanding as although Lydden is Clive’s local circuit, he had never driven it before. For the first timed runs both drivers improved.

In the afternoon the weather became hotter, but would the competition between the two Morgans heat up in the next three timed runs?. The answer was no! Lap times changed slightly but relative positions remained exactly the same. Clive had aced it.

The overall conclusion for both drivers was that it had been an enjoyable day in the sunshine at a fast demanding circuit. Many congratulations to Clive for getting 100 points for the event.
