Race Report
Simon Baines
Event organiser BARC Midlands worked tirelessly to ensure that the Snetterton Event could take place this year and their hard work did not disappoint. The organization was, as always, first class to ensure that the event ran like clockwork.
Four SpeedMoggers were entered for the event – Simon Baines, George Proudfoot and Chris and Michele Bailey. BARC Midlands organize a 2 day event at this venue but SpeedMog only include the Sunday event as a Championship round. However this does allow for some additional practice on the Saturday, something that Simon decided was worthwhile as he could also enjoy the 24 Hour 2CV race that was taking place on the 200 circuit during the Saturday evening.
The event consisted of 1.8 laps of the 0.96 mile infield ‘100’ circuit. The length of the circuit allows 2 cars to run on track with plenty of separation to ensure there is no baulking.
The event would consist of one (timed) practice run and three timed runs with the fastest to count.
The practice run saw Simon set the pace, picking up roughly where he finished the day before whilst the Baileys and George were finding their feet. George was getting his eye back in, having not been here since 2024. Meanwhile Chris and Michele were getting settled in and looking to better last year’s PB’s. A strong smell of burning from a rear brake was giving Chris something to do before the 1st timed run but it proved to be nothing serious.
On the 1st timed run, Michele being the first away from the line, went fractionally slower. Simon was second away and as he was about to complete his first lap, the course controller released George. This inevitably resulted in a baulk for Simon but didn’t distract George as he recorded a new PB.
Simon was then granted a re-run and now having the benefit of warm tyres, he recorded his fastest run of the day. Chris being the last to run improved by just over a second, now feeling happier with the car. Positions at this stage were Simon 1st, with Chris 2nd and George 3rd, split by only 0.14 points!
Lunchtime and an opportunity to relax with a light lunch and a chance to sample some of Michele’s baking skills.
What – no brownies!! Was this a ploy to ensure that Simon would not win?
No matter, the Lemon Drizzle Cake was a worthy alternative so all was soon forgiven.
Timed Run 2 produced improvements for everyone except Simon who was a second slower than Run 1. George reported a grassy moment on the exit of the hairpin but this clearly didn’t slow him as he clocked another PB, another half second quicker than Run 1. Chris found another second from his Run 1 time but Michele was mysteriously slower.
Timed Run 3 – and the last run of the day. Michele was again first off the line and she came back with a beaming smile, improving on her previous time by almost 2 seconds and beating her PB set in 2025 by 1.3 seconds. Simon was slower again, possibly a result of trying too hard.
George and Chris also improved, George setting another PB with a time of 123.70 secs whilst Chris couldn’t quite beat his PB but still held George off to take a well fought 2nd place, albeit by only 0.32 points – equating to 0.35 seconds!
The final results were as follows;
1st Simon Baines
2nd Chris Bailey
3rd George Proudfoot
4th Michele Bailey
