Race Report

A trip to Trac Mon on Anglesey is always worthwhile, and a two-day event is well worth the long journey. Two different layouts at this cracking track which is in a fabulous location, overlooking Snowdonia, the Llyn Peninsular and the sea.

Saturday dawned bright and sunny, clear blue skies with not a cloud in sight, but very windy so not warm. 5 Morgans with 8 drivers, including Simon Clarke, (son of Paul) joining the fun and frolics of SpeedMog, sharing Paul’s class 9 Roadster; another family entry, and lowering the average age of the competitors! Although SpeedMog have been competing on the National Circuit at Trac Mon for years, this year was slightly different as it was not a double lapper; a single lap only. There was only 1 practice lap, which saw Simon ‘the Baron’ Baines posting the fastest lap, and Simon C only 1 second behind Paul. Chris was not far behind them which meant that he was heading the field. The “Double Drives” on parade. Ella and David were having their usual ‘Frow Fight’, with Ella slightly ahead, while George and I were battling at the slower end of things.

First timed run saw improvements all round, other than Simon C who pushed a bit too hard. However, on the second run he was faster than dad Paul. Ella had a ‘moment’ and consequently was slower; Dave, George and I were also slower – probably for no good reasons. Run 3 came round quickly with Simon B, Paul and Chris all going faster – it was close at the top. Simon C had a pirouette and realised that he might have found the limit at Rocket. Ella was stretching her lead over dad Dave, and George was posting his fastest time of the day.

Not for the hardy Speedmoggers, runs 4 and 5 were there to be enjoyed. Ella went under the 70 second barrier on both her runs, whilst Dave and George posted their fastest times of the day on their final runs. The Baron needed to go 5/1000ths of a second quicker than his quickest time to beat Chris which he duly did on his final run – it was that close. Final results were: 1 Simon B 2 Chris 3 Paul Special mention for Simon C who finished 5th in his first event – clearly a chip off the Clarke block; very well done to him.
